Baptism is the sacrament by which we are born again of water and the Holy Spirit, by which we receive in a new and spiritual life, the dignity of adoption as sons and daughters of the God and heirs to the kingdom of God.
For Parents and Godparents: When a baby is brought for Baptism, the first and primary sacrament, it is the parents and godparents who must give assurances that the grace that God imparts in the sacrament will be lived and that the child will be brought up in the practice of the Faith. This means going to Mass and learning about the Faith. It is for this reason that the Church takes the preparation of parents and godparents very seriously. The preparation is not to celebrate the liturgy of baptism, although it is a reason to celebrate, but to understand the consequences of the baby receiving the sacrament.
What do I need to do?
Parents must be active in our parish for at least three months. Pre-baptismal instruction is required for parents and godparents.
Sponsors/Godparents must be:
In order for you to have your child baptized at San Clemente, at least one parent of the child must be a registered member of San Clemente parish or you must have the written permission from your own pastor to have your child baptized at San Clemente. Parents and sponsors must take baptismal preparation classes either at San Clemente or in their home parish if they have not had them within the last two years.
Our Baptism preparation classes consist of two sessions which are normally held on the second and third Saturdays of each month at 7:00PM in the Parish Hall. Attendance is required at both classes for parents and sponsors for completion of Baptism requirements. Please note- Baptism classes are not held in the month of December, the month of Easter or July.
