Eucharistic Ministers or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are called by God to become servants to other members of the Body of Christ. The function of an Extraordinary Minister is to assist the priest in distributing the true presence of Christ to other members during the sacrifice of the Mass.
When we use the word "Extraordinary" it is a term meant to distinguish these ministers from the "ordinary" ministers of Communion--priests and deacons.
Who may serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?
- Must be 18 years of age or older and have received all of the Initiation Sacraments - Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.
- If married, the marriage must be a valid Catholic marriage.
- Must be a practicing Catholic who is a registered parishioner and who shows a deep reverence for and devotion to the Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.
